Press invitation to join the Award Ceremony of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism

The Award Ceremony will take place on Thursday 14 October at 12.00 at the European Parliament (Press Conference Room Anna Politkovskaya).

Accredited journalists are cordially invited to join the Award Ceremony, which will be opened by the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli. Two of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s sons, Matthew and Andrew Caruana Galizia, will attend the session.

The winner will be officially announced by the Secretary General of the International Federation of Journalists Anthony Bellanger, as representative of the 29 members of the European jury.

Background

The Prize, with the support of the European Parliament, is a tribute to the Maltese investigative journalist and blogger who was assassinated in October 2017. The Prize rewards on a yearly basis outstanding journalism promoting or defending the core principles and values of the European Union, such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and human rights.

The Prize has been opened to professional journalists and teams of professional journalists of any nationality to submit in-depth stories that have been published or broadcast by a media outlet based in one of the 27 European Union member states. From 22 June to 1st September 2021, more than 200 journalists from the 27 EU countries applied for the prize with their media stories.

The Prize itself, and the €20 000 prize money, demonstrate the European Parliament’s strong support for investigative journalism and the protection of journalists around the world.
