Key debate: results of the December EU summit

From 9.00 to 10.30, plenary will assess with Presidents Michel and von der Leyen the outcome of the 15 December European Council. MEPs are likely to voice their concern about the situation in Ukraine and discuss further EU aid to the country. They are also expected to highlight the inflation and energy crisis, as well as relations with the US and the southern neighbourhood.

Election of a new EP Vice-President

Plenary is set to choose today a new Vice-President to replace Eva Kaili (NA, EL). The elected MEP will become Parliament’s fifth VP. As established in the Rules of Procedure, a candidate will need an absolute majority of votes cast by secret ballot to be elected.

Uber lobbying in the EU

MEPs will quiz the Commission and the Swedish Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall at around 17.00 on their response to revelations about Uber’s lobbying practices in the EU and how they might have affected the labour and social rights of their drivers.

Human rights and democracy in Brazil, Morocco and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Starting around 18.00, MEPs will discuss the storming of the Brazilian democratic institutions, the situation of journalists in Morocco, notably the case of Omar Radi, and the humanitarian consequences of the blockade in Nagorno-Karabakh. Three separate resolutions will be put to the vote on Thursday.

In brief:

Far-right terrorist threats to democracy. In a debate with Commissioner Johansson and the Swedish Minister for EU Affairs Roswall around 16.00, plenary will look into the risks posed by far-right extremist networks aiming to undermine democratic institutions and norms.

Protection of the rule of law against impunity in Spain. In this session’s topical debate, MEPs will assess from 13.00 with Commissioner Reynders the state of rule of law in Spain.

Search and rescue of migrants at sea. The criminalisation of humanitarian assistance to migrants, including search and rescue operations carried out by NGOs, will be the focus of a debate with the Commission at around 18.00.

Platform workers: briefing by the rapporteur. The Parliament’s Media Directorate is holding a briefing for journalists in Strasbourg with lead MEP Elisabetta Gualmini (S&D, IT) at 13.30  -  Room Weiss N3.3

Votes

Between 12.00 and 13.00, MEPs will vote, among others, on:

• three annual reports, on the EU’s common foreign and security and defence policies, and on human rights and democracy in the world;
• protection of gamers and support to the videogame industry, and
• the 30-year anniversary of the European single market.
