Mariya Gabriel, Bulgarian Commissioner-designate for Digital Economy and Society replied to questions from several committees’ members assessing her skills.

During the discussion on Tuesday afternoon, Commissioner-designate Mariya Gabriel was quizzed by MEPs on several topics, including the digitisation of the European industry, possible solutions to cyber-attacks, the future of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), radio spectrum allocation in the EU and the different regulatory and fiscal aspects of online platforms.

 

Ms Gabriel was nominated by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to take over the responsibility for the Digital Economy and Society portfolio.

The lead committees for this hearing were the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT). Internal Market, Legal Affairs and Civil Liberties committees are also involved in the discussion.

 

Next steps

 

The committees' letter of evaluation will be sent to the Conference of Committee Chairs and subsequently to the Conference of Presidents. Unless it decides to seek further information, the Conference of Presidents, following an exchange of views, shall declare the hearings closed and authorise the publication of the letter of evaluation.

 

The commissioner-designate should be approved with a majority of votes cast, in a secret ballot during Parliament’s plenary session in July.
