Transport MEPs quiz Commissioner Bulc on road mobility package proposals
Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc presented the road mobility package proposals to the Transport and Tourism Committee on Monday, followed by a discussion with the MEPs.
MEPs quizzed Commissioner Bulc on how the Commission decided on new cabotage limits for freight transport by road within national borders following a cross-border operation, and how the proposed rules would tackle fraud. Some also asked the Commissioner about how to respond to constituents who see the proposals as an opening of the market.
Some members were critical of the proposal on cabotage saying that it would lead to more fraud. Others said that the new road package proposals may put jobs at risk in Eastern European member states.
Several committee members stressed that new provisions on taking regular weekly rest outside the truck cabin require more investment in developing secure parking areas. Some expressed concern about delays in the use of smart tachographs, which record driving and rest times and would help tackle fraud.
