Coup in Myanmar: Leading MEPs call for democracy to be unconditionally restored

Joint statement on Myanmar’s military coup from the Chairs of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and on Development and of the Delegation for relations with South-East Asia and ASEAN.

The Chairs of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs David McAllister (EPP, DE), the Committee on Development Tomas Tobé (EPP, SV) and of the Delegation on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Daniel Caspary (EPP, DE) condemned last night's coup by the military (Tatmadaw) in Myanmar. They called for President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and all others who have been arrested to be swiftly and unconditionally released. The legitimate civilian government must be immediately restored and the parliament reopened, warn the Chairs in their Statement.

Joint Statement: “Last night’s military coup constitutes a clear violation of Myanmar’s constitution. The European Parliament urges the Tatmadaw to respect the outcome of the November 2020 general elections and to adhere to democratic norms. The Parliament must be immediately reopened, with access given to all elected representatives, and the legitimate civilian government must be restored. In particular, we call for the immediate and unconditional release of President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and all others who have been arrested. Since 2015, the European Union has politically and financially supported Myanmar’s process of democratic transition and has undertaken enormous efforts to promote peace, human rights and development in the country. In October 2015, the EU signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement as an international witness, reflecting its key role in supporting the peace process. During 2014-2020, the EU allocated EUR 688 million in development support to Myanmar. Myanmar also benefits from trade preferences under the "Everything But Arms" scheme, which allows duty-free and quota-free access to the European single market. Unfortunately, all these positive developments have been abruptly reversed by last night’s events."
