The EU high-level conference "Youth, Peace and Security, Promoting Youth in Peace building" will be held in the European Parliament, in Brussels, on 23-24 May.

In partnership with the European External Action Service and the United Nations the lawmakers will discuss with young peacebuilders from Europe, Africa and Mediterrannean how to foster EU policy on youth, peace and security and better include young people in conflict prevention. They will also explore youth-led initiatives to prevent violent extremism.

The high-level conference seeks to step-up the EU’s engagement in the implementation of UN Security Council resolution on youth, peace and security (UNSCR 2250) and to promote EU-UN cooperation on youth in peacebuilding.

Programme

EP President Antonio Tajani will kick off the conference at 14.00, to be followed by presentations of the EP Vice-President Heidi Hautala (Greens, FI), EU Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, and Youth representatives.

After the opening session, the conference will be structured around four themes:

  • Youth inclusion for conflict prevention and sustaining peace.
  • Young people innovating for peace
  • Empowering young people to prevent/counter violent extremism
  • Protecting the human rights of youth

The thematic debates will be followed by an interactive dialogue with Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis, EU Special Representative for Human Rights and youth participants.

The first day of the conference takes place in Parliament’s ASP 5G-3 room from 14.00 to 18.00.

The conference will be closed by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini the next day at 9.00 in the European External Action Service building.
