MEPs will debate the assassination of the Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov and the general state of democracy in Russia with EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini on Wednesday afternoon.

MEPs will debate European economic priorities with the commissioners for the euro, employment and internal market, and the Latvian Presidency on Wednesday morning. They are likely to support the Commission's three-pillar approach for growth and recovery, based on investment, structural reforms and growth-friendly fiscal consolidation.

Rules capping fees that banks charge retailers for processing shoppers’ payments will be put to vote by Parliament as a whole on Tuesday. The rules were agreed informally with the Council of Ministers last December. The cap would apply to both cross-border and domestic card-based payments and should cut costs for card users.

MEPs vote on Tuesday on a resolution calling for 10 days' paid paternity leave and recognition of a woman’s right to abortion and contraception. They will point to problems caused by gender inequality such as violence against women, the gender pay gap and the career glass ceiling.

MEPs will give their input on the future Energy Union proposals in a debate with the Council and Commission on Wednesday at 09.00. This issue will top the agenda at a meeting of EU heads of state or government in Brussels on 19 and 20 March.

King Abdullah II of Jordan will deliver a formal address to Parliament on Tuesday at noon. This will be his fourth appearance in the Chamber, following his visits in 2002, 2007 and 2012.
