MEPs to discuss working conditions in Bangladesh two years after Rana Plaza
Parliament will mark the second anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster when the collapse of a textile factory led to over 1,100 deaths. In their debate on Monday, MEPs will also discuss progress since 2013 in improving workers' conditions under the Bangladesh Sustainability Compact. They will vote on a resolution Wednesday.
The Bangladesh Sustainability Compact is an initiative launched two years ago by the EU, together with the Bangladeshi authorities, the United States and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), with the aim of improving labour, health and safety conditions for workers and encouraging responsible behaviour by companies. It lists short-term and long-term commitments to boosting labour rights, inspections and occupational safety.
