Debate on crisis in Burundi

Violence in the run-up to Burundi’s presidential elections will be debated by MEPs on Wednesday.

MEPs are likely to welcome the Burundi authorities’ recent announcement that the elections have been postponed, as recommended by East African heads of state at the Dar Es-Salaam summit on 31 May. They are likely to reiterate their call to Burundi’s authorities and President Pierre Nkurunziza to abide by electoral rules enshrined in the Arusha agreement and to refrain from taking any further repressive measures against opposition leaders, civil society and media.

Procedure: Non-legislative resolution, Statement by the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

Debate: Wednesday, 10 June

Vote: July plenary session (6-9 July)
