Parliament to take a stand on the state of Hungary's democracy

Parliament will assess the EU Commission's work on monitoring the state of democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary in a resolution to be voted on Wednesday. This wraps up the 2 December debate on whether the Commission's rule of law framework ,set up to prevent a systemic threat, should have been activated in response to political developments in Hungary.

The Commission said on 2 December that it did not see a systemic threat to democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary, although several EU infringement procedures were or are underway against it and more are expected.

Some MEPs criticised the Commission’s purely “legislative” approach and asked for more political action.

Procedure: non-legislative resolution

Vote: Wednesday, 16 December
