State and future of the European Union debate with Jean-Claude Juncker

Two days before the 27 EU heads of state or government – minus the UK – meet informally in Bratislava, Parliament will discuss the way forward for the European Union, following EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s annual “State of the European Union” speech on Wednesday morning.

The three-hour debate is likely to focus on migration, jobs, terrorism, Brexit and how to address the core demands of EU citizens. Since 2010, the annual State of the European Union speech and debate have kicked off discussions on the EU’s political agenda for the year.

On 6 July, Parliament voted a resolution setting out its priorities for the Commission’s work programme for 2017, which it is to be presented in October.

Procedure: Commission Statement (followed by a debate)

Debate: Wednesday, 14 September
