MEPs to discuss improved disaster management for the EU

The Commission will present its proposal to strengthen and speed up cross-border disaster relief in a debate on Wednesday.

To ensure a more efficient response to natural disasters such as earthquakes, wildfires and floods, the Commission proposed setting up a dedicated EU reserve of civil protection resources, rescEU, which could be quickly deployed during disasters. Furthermore, it would strengthen the member states’ capacity to coordinate their response by, for instance, financing operation costs during disaster relief.

Quick Facts

Established in 2001, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism provides a unified, supportive and collective response to disasters in EU countries as well as Iceland, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.

In November, the Commission proposed creating a new system for an even more efficient and timely response to disasters, which can handle multiple disasters at the same time.

Procedure:  Council and Commission statements

Debate: Wednesday, 13 December
