Imported and EU fisheries products must be treated equally
All imported fisheries products should meet the high standards imposed by EU law, MEPs will stress in a non-binding resolution to be put to the vote on Tuesday.
The EU Commission needs to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture products from non-EU countries comply with EU conservation and management standards and hygiene requirements by implementing control measures more efficiently, said Fisheries Committee MEPs in a report they adopted in April.
The EU is the world’s largest market for fisheries and aquaculture, absorbing 24% of total global imports in 2016. EU member states depend on imports for over 60% of their total fish consumption.
