Colombia: President Juan Manuel Santos to address EP as his term comes to an end

Outgoing Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will address MEPs in a formal sitting on Wednesday at noon.

Santos, who will step down in August following presidential elections on 27 May (with a possible second round on 17 June), will call for EU relations with Latin America to be strengthened and tell MEPs about the implementation of the peace process in his country. He is also likely to refer to the political and economic crisis in neighbouring Venezuela.

Santos has been President since 2010. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for his efforts in reaching a peace agreement with the FARC, which was signed in November 2016.

Santos cannot run again for President due to the term limitation enshrined in the Colombian Constitution.

The European Parliament will send an electoral observation mission to Colombia, headed by Izaskun Bilbao (ALDE, ES), to follow the presidential election.
