Strengthening security through an EU-wide information system

The improved Schengen Information System will contribute to the EU’s fight against terrorism, cross-border crime and irregular migration.

MEPs will debate on Tuesday and vote on Wednesday on three draft regulations that will update the Schengen Information System (SIS), the most widely used information system for security and border management in Europe. Parliament and Council negotiators already reached a preliminary deal on the topic in June.

The reinforced SIS will help border guards to better monitor who is crossing the EU's borders, support police and law enforcement in capturing criminals and terrorists and offer greater protection to missing children and vulnerable adults. It will also improve the enforcement of return decisions issued to non-EU nationals illegally staying in the EU.
