MEPs are set to condemn the “illegal” election of Luis Parra as new Speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly, in a resolution to be put to the vote on Thursday.
Mr Parra and opposition leader Juan Guaidó both declared themselves new speakers of the Venezuelan National Assembly on Sunday 5 January, triggering another wave of political unrest in the country. A year ago, Mr Guaidó, in his capacity as parliamentary speaker at the time, also declared himself Venezuela’s interim President - a declaration which was supported by almost 60 countries, as well as the European Parliament - after disputing the 2018 re-election of incumbent authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro.
MEPs will discuss the continuous tumultuous situation in Venezuela with EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a vote on a resolution on Thursday.
