Capitol Hill riots: MEPs to debate the political situation in the United States

On Wednesday morning, Parliament will debate the recent violent attack on the US Congress and the inauguration of Joe Biden as the new US President.

In a debate at 08.30, MEPs will comment on the riots and storming of the United States Capitol, an attempt by some of Mr Trump’s hard-line supporters to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election and prevent the formalisation of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

They are also set to discuss the inauguration of Mr Biden as new US President, future EU-US relations and the developments related to the impeachment proceedings against President Trump for his role in inciting the recent violence.

Mr Trump leaves office on 20 January, when Joe Biden will be sworn in.
