Refugees and migrants at the EU’s external borders: debate in plenary

The difficulties member states face in managing migration into EU territory will be the focus of a debate with Council and Commission on Tuesday morning.

Despite the number of arrivals consistently decreasing since the 2015 peak, the humanitarian crisis is still being repeated at the EU’s external borders. In the last few months, in the context of a global pandemic, the situation of migrants and asylum-seekers on the Spanish Canary Islands and at the Croatian-Bosnian border has added to the already dire conditions on the Greek islands and the recurrent challenge of disembarking persons rescued while crossing the Central Mediterranean.
