MEPs to debate priorities of Portugal’s Council Presidency

On Wednesday morning, MEPs and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa will discuss the programme for the next six-month presidency of the Council of the EU.

The Portuguese presidency will focus on addressing the social dimension of the COVID-19 pandemic and achieving an inclusive climate and digital transition.

With the aim of strengthening the European social model, the presidency has announced new efforts to implement the European Pillar of Social Rights, notably by organising the Porto Social Summit in May.

Adopting the first European Climate Law, continuing negotiations on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, and EU relations with Africa and Latin America will be high on the agenda. Lisbon also intends to move forward with the EU-Mercosur trade deal, agreed in June 2019 but still pending ratification.
