Colombia: Parliament to express firm support for peace process

MEPs will assess the situation in Colombia as the country approaches the fifth anniversary of the signing of the peace agreement.

In a debate on Wednesday afternoon with EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell, MEPs are expected to strongly support the Colombian peace process. However, they are set to express concerns about the slow implementation of the peace agreement and the continuing high level of violence and impunity in the country. MEPs will vote on a resolution on the issue on Thursday.

Background

The Colombian government and the country’s largest guerrilla organisation, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), signed a peace agreement in 2016, ending five decades of armed conflict. As the country approaches the fifth anniversary of the signing of the agreement, the peace process is under strain from ongoing political opposition, failures in implementation and an escalating human rights crisis.
