Promoting the rights of EU citizens living with a disability

MEPs are set to call for measures to strengthen the rights of Europeans living with a disability, including facilitating easier travel and access to non-segregated housing.

Mobility, education and housing – these are the areas where the draft report says reform is most needed to help Europeans living with disabilities. Key recommendations by MEPs include more flexible assistance with rail travel and introducing a European Disability Card; making sure that education systems can accommodate different kinds of learners and different student needs; and providing non-institutionalised, non-segregated housing to citizens with a disability, so that they can be active participants in their community.

MEPs are also set to say that the EU needs to focus more on combatting violence (including gender-based violence) and harassment, which people with a disability are more likely to experience than their peers, and to close the employment gap between disabled people and others.

The debate will take place on Monday, the text will be put to the vote on Wednesday, with results announced on Thursday morning.
