EU sports: MEPs to ask for values-based model, question “breakaway competitions”

Plenary will discuss on Monday how to enhance the EU’s involvement in sports to encourage a more equitable model that aligns with EU values of inclusiveness and fairness.

A draft report prepared by the Committee on Culture and Education calls for the channelling of funding from the elite level to amateur and grassroots sports. MEPs are expected to say that gender equality in sports, including on pay and visibility, also needs to be secured. Additionally, the draft report expresses strong opposition to “breakaway competitions” that undermine EU values of solidarity, sustainability, inclusiveness, open competition, and fairness, and which endanger the stability of the overall sports ecosystem.

Procedure: Own-initiative report
