Fisheries: Parliament to vote on extension of EU-Mauritius protocol

On Tuesday, MEPs are expected to give their go-ahead to prolonging the EU-Mauritius fisheries partnership protocol for six months, until a new agreement is reached.

The six-month extension should allow continued access to Mauritian waters for EU vessels fishing tuna and tuna-like species of up to 2,000 tonnes. Four EU member states fish in Mauritian waters - France, Italy, Portugal and Spain. In return, Mauritius will receive a financial contribution of 287,500 euro.

The protocol also strengthens cooperation between the EU and Mauritius in the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources and in the cannery industry. The Mauritian cannery industry processes around 500,000 tonnes of tuna caught annually by the EU fleet in the Indian Ocean.

Background

The fisheries agreement protocol between the EU and Mauritius expired on 7 December 2021, and negotiations for a new agreement continue.

Vote: Tuesday, 13 September 2022
