Improving mental health at work

On Wednesday, MEPs and the Commission will discuss how to prevent psychosocial risks to wellbeing in the workplace.

MEPs have been asking the Commission recently for measures to reduce psychosocial risks at work, including new legislation to safeguard mental health in the workplace. MEPs are also expected to focus on progress on instituting the “right to disconnect” in the EU. In a report adopted in 2019, Parliament called on the Commission to propose legislation outlining worker’s rights in light of an increase in teleworking practices. They are also set to urge the Commission to address the use of AI in the workplace.

Background

Risks to mental health in work can be any practice that may lead to negative physical, psychological or social outcomes, such as high workload, long working hours, and a lack of work-life balance. In 2020, almost half (45%) of workers in the EU reported exposure to risks, according to data from the European Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS).

The debate with Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu will take place in the evening.

Debate: Wednesday, 21 May

Procedure: Commission statement, no resolution
