Briefing

MEPs to evaluate progress of four EU candidate countries

On Tuesday, plenary will review the EU accession progress of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Georgia. Four reports will be put to a vote on Wednesday.

In reports adopted in June 2025, the Committee on Foreign Affairs commends Albania’s commitment to meeting the EU’s membership criteria, welcoming its aim to finalise accession talks by 2027. MEPs encourage North Macedonia to continue reform efforts and adopt certain constitutional amendments, despite the government facing political challenges and public frustration. The report on Bosnia and Herzegovina praises the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with the country. MEPs acknowledge important legal revisions the government there has made, but are concerned about the stalled progress and weak implementation. On Georgia, the committee condemns the continued democratic backsliding and repression, and demands new parliamentary elections. MEPs refuse to recognise the legitimacy of Georgia’s current one-party Parliament and President.

North Macedonia was granted EU candidate status in 2005, Albania in 2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2022 and Georgia in 2023.

A press conference with the rapporteurs on Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia will be held at 14:00 CET and with the rapporteur on Georgia.at 14.30 on Wednesday in the European Parliament’s Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room in Strasbourg.
