Gas storage legislation and the EU’s energy security roadmap
MEPs will vote on a draft law to address gas market speculation and reduce prices by introducing greater flexibility gas refilling rules.
On Tuesday, the plenary will hold a vote on updated gas storage legislation, on which Parliament and Council have already reached an informal agreement. The law will extend the EU’s 2022 gas storage scheme until 31 December 2027; it would have otherwise have expired at the end of 2025. The law aims to ensure gas supply security ahead of the winter season. It also sets out to ease market tensions, as speculation surrounding the existing mandatory 90% fill rate target by 1 November every year has driven up refilling costs each preceding summer.
Energy security
Also on Tuesday, MEPs will vote on a separate report on the need for a comprehensive approach to EU energy security that takes into account infrastructure, supply, reliability, affordability, and sustainability. They are expected to call for the development of EU clean sources of energy, and to reduce reliance on external suppliers.
The report emphasises the need for well-functioning and integrated energy markets, energy efficiency, and resilient infrastructure to successfully manage the intermittency of renewable energy sources.
