EU values in Hungary: MEPs to take stock of recent developments

On Tuesday, MEPs will assess the continuing threats to the rule of law, judicial independence and EU funds in Hungary.

In a debate with representatives of the Spanish Presidency of the Council and the Commission, MEPs will review what has happened since Parliament’s resolution of June 2023 that denounced deliberate and systematic efforts to undermine EU values in the country.

The issue of “frozen” EU funds and the requirements that Hungary must fulfil to receive them will be raised, as will Hungary’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. MEPs are also expected to ask about the 15 November discussion over the Article 7 procedure at the General Affairs Council.

Debate: Wednesday 22 November

Procedure: Council and Commission statements, no resolution
