Healthcare sector: addressing labour shortages and working conditions

On Tuesday, MEPs and the Commission will debate the EU’s labour needs for the health care sector and how to ensure it offers quality employment.

The WHO expects a shortage of 4.1 million healthcare workers in the EU by 2030, despite having more health and care workers than ever. Given labour shortages likely to intensify in the coming years due to the aging of the current healthcare workforce, MEPs are expected to call measures to address these shortages.

According to a recent Eurofound study, health and social care is one of the EU sectors with the most evident structural labour shortages. The shortages are the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply and demand discrepancies, and a lack of planning and forecasting.

In a separate debate on Wednesday evening, MEPs and the Commission will debate the mental health of Europe’s youth.

Debate: Tuesday, 11 February, Wednesday, 12 February

Procedure: Commission statement, no resolution
