EU countries have agreed to grant the Union exclusive competences including in concluding trade agreements on behalf of the bloc and managing the euro.
In many other areas, the EU shares competences with the member states, which means that both the EU and EU countries can adopt legally binding acts. In other areas, member states take the leading role, while the EU supports or complements their actions.
