It has been a difficult year, coping with the continued impact of the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, energy supply problems, soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis.

Underlining the need for justice, solidarity and peace, Parliament’s President Roberta Metsola said in a Christmas message, “I am proud that when it mattered the most, Europe united in the face of aggression and remained steadfast in our support towards Ukraine and its people.”

Reflecting that support, Parliament awarded the 2022 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought to the brave people of Ukraine.
