Louis Michel, (ALDE, BE), the Co-president of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, expresses solidarity to the families whose dear and near ones lost their lives and to the authorities of Vanuatu after typhoon Pam battered the tiny Pacific nation.

Mr. Michel welcomes the immediate response by the European Commission to make an initial €1 million euro available to help the emergency relief efforts in Vanuatu, following the devastation caused by tropical cyclone.

"It is with great shock and sadness that I learned about the devastating effects of this cyclone. Our thoughts go to the victims and their families and friends and I hope the people of Vanuatu feel that Europe stands by them in these hard times.

We had intensive contact over the last year with the Parliament of the Republic of Vanuatu, as we are working together to prepare the next session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, which Vanuatu would host in June."

Vanuatu, one of the poorest countries in the world, is very vulnerable place because of its location in the middle of the ocean and is prone to tropical cyclones or typhoons, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
