Informal exchanges of views with candidates for ECB Vice-President

Statement by Roberto Gualtieri, Chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs

Yesterday ECON Members held informal exchanges of views with the two candidates for the position as the next ECB Vice-President. Both candidates made a good presentation.

The majority of the political groups considered Governor Lane's performance more convincing. Some groups expressed reservations for Minister De Guindos appointment.

The ECON Committee regrets that no female candidates have been put forward, as requested, and calls for a more gender balanced representation in the ECB. The ECON Committee considers that a hearing of both candidates also by the Council would be an added value to the procedure.

Today I accordingly informed the President of the Eurogroup Mário Centeno and the ECOFIN President and Minister of Finance of Bulgaria Vladislav Goranov.
