Murder of journalist Ján Kuciak: EP delegation to visit Slovakia Thursday-Friday
An ad-hoc delegation of six MEPs will leave for Slovakia on Wednesday evening for a two-day fact-finding mission following the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée.
The delegation will be composed of the following MEPs from 6 different political groups:
- Ingeborg GRÄSSLE (EPP, DE), co-Chair
- Claude MORAES (S&D, UK), co-Chair
- Ryszard CZARNECKI (ECR, PL)
- Sophia in 't VELD (ALDE, NL)
- Benedek JÁVOR (Greens/EFA, HU)
- Marco VALLI (EFDD, IT)
The delegation will meet with anti-corruption NGOs, journalists, government and state representatives (including the Slovak President and the Prime Minister and ministers of interior, justice, finance and agriculture), law enforcement authorities (including the General Prosecutor and the President of the Police), and the Slovak Agricultural paying agency. They will also visit Veľká Mača, the village where Mr Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová lived and were found murdered.
The mission will be wound up by a press conference with the heads of the delegation on Friday at the EP’s Liaison Office in Bratislava.
Following the mission in Slovakia, the delegation will draft a report, which will be made public and forwarded to the EP’s Conference of Presidents (President of the House and leaders of all political groups).
Background
The decision to send an ad-hoc fact-finding mission to Slovakia was taken by the Parliament’s Conference of Presidents on 1 March in the wake of the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová. The mission’s programme and the delegation’s composition were approved by the Conference of Presidents on 7 March.
The murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée and the protection of journalists in Europe will be debated by MEPs next week during the EP plenary session in Strasbourg.
