Civil Liberties MEPs approved the deal reached with Council on new rules to strengthen data protection in EU institutions, bodies and agencies.

The new rules will cover EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies to ensure a strong and coherent framework for data processing. The aim of the update is to bring the rules in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as the proposed e-privacy rules.

Civil Liberties MEPs confirmed the deal in a vote on Tuesday by 42 in favour, 2 against, 3 abstentions.

The agreed text now needs to be formally approved by the Parliament as a whole and the Council of the EU before entering into force. EP plenary is scheduled to vote on the agreed text in September.
