Parliament delegation to visit the United Nations General Assembly and US Congress

Press Releases

A delegation of MEPs will visit the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York and then continue to Washington, D.C. for meetings with US officials next week.

A European Parliament delegation of 17 MEPs, led by David McAllister (EPP, DE), will travel to New York and Washington, D.C. from 27 to 31 October for meetings with US and UN high-level officials. The stay will include a visit to the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will provide an opportunity for MEPs to assess how the UN General Assembly has implemented EU priorities and discuss new priorities for the UNGA, as well as possible ways to further uphold multilateralism in the current political and security context. The fight against climate change will also be on the table during the talks.

In New York, the delegation will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the President of the 74th UN General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande and the Head of the EU delegation to the UN João Vale de Almeida. It will also hold talks with UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, UN Special Rapporteur for Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions Agnès Callamard, and Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.

In Washington, MEPs will aim to deepen the political dialogue with the US administration and Congress and exchange views on foreign policy, human rights and security and defence-related issues of transatlantic relevance.

Besides Mr McAllister, Parliament’s upcoming delegation will be composed of 16 MEPs from its Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), and subcommittees on human rights (DROI) and security and defence (SEDE).
