Parliament today opposed the Commission’s plans to authorise the import of products containing four glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium resistant GMOs.

The European Parliament today opposed the European Commission’s plans to authorise the import of products containing four herbicide-resistant GMOs and calls on the Commission to withdraw its draft implementing decisions on these products. This follows the decision of Plenary 10 October 2019 to oppose three other herbicide-resistant GMOs.

The authorisations cover the import of products containing or consisting of GMOs cotton LLCotton25, soybean MON 89788, maize MON 89034 including sub-combinations, maize Bt11 × MIR162 × MIR604 × 1507 × 5307 × GA21 including sub-combinations.

These GMOs have been made tolerant to glyphosate-based and glufosinate ammonium-based herbicides. MEPs say that a number of studies show that such GM crops result in a higher use of weed killers. The crop may be exposed to repeated doses, which potentially lead to higher quantity of residues in the harvest, they say.

“Undemocratic process”

The resolutions voted today are non-binding. In these MEPs also criticise that the Commission continues to authorise GMOs in spite of lack of support from Member States and the numerous objections of the European Parliament. It is unacceptable that what should be the exception is becoming the norm.

Background

A separate EU law that would enable any EU member state to restrict or prohibit the sale and use of EU-approved GMO food or feed on its territory was opposed by Parliament in October 2015. MEPs are concerned that this law might prove unworkable or that it could lead to the reintroduction of border checks between pro- and anti-GMO countries. They called on the Commission to table a new proposal.

The resolution on GMO cotton LLCotton25 was adopted with 448 for, 189 against and 28 abstentions. For GMO soybean MON 89788 448 was for, 185 against and 30 abstained. For GMO maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9 465 was for, 169 against and 30 abstained, and for GMO maize Bt11 × MIR162 × MIR604 × 1507 × 5307 × GA21 467 was for, 171 against and 27 abstained.
