Statement by Tomas Tobé, Chair of European Parliament’s Committee on Development, on the launch of the pledging event “the Coronavirus Global Response Initiative”.
“The pandemic is spreading quickly, leading to an unprecedented crisis worldwide. In order to make the world safer, we need to accelerate the work on diagnostics, on treatments and on the development of a vaccine, which will be made available all over the world. This is why I fully support the Coronavirus Global Response Initiative and the launching of the online pledging conference hosted by the European Union.
The Global Response initiative aims at making these tests, treatments and vaccines, once found, available globally and at an affordable price. This is the only way we can fight the pandemic globally. All countries, and more specifically developing countries, already fragile, need to have access to these items as quickly as possible if we want to stop the virus from spreading wider and to prevent the crisis from getting worse.
The pandemic needs a quick and ambitious answer and I strongly encourage all international donors to contribute to this worldwide pledging marathon and be part of the fight against COVID-19.”
To fight the COVID-19 crisis, the European Union has launched, together with several partners, an online pledging event - the Coronavirus Global Response Initiative. The objective is to boost funding for diagnostics, medicines and vaccines and to raise up to 7.5 billion euros in initial funding. Countries, international organisations, financial institutions and private sector companies from all over the world can pledge to contribute to this initiative.
