Security and Defence Subcommittee: MEPs to discuss the Strategic Compass

Press Releases

MEPs will debate the future document designed to provide enhanced political and strategic direction for EU security and defence, on Monday, 28. September.

Security and Defence Subcommittee MEPs will hold an in-depth exchange of views with the Ambassador Charles Fries, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and Crisis Response. The discussion will focus in particular on the future “Strategic Compass”

Background

The Strategic Compass is the new policy document that should facilitate a more rapid response in the event of a security crisis. The EU security priorities have already been defined in the EU Global Strategy, and now the EU member states should specify how these priorities could be implemented. The first step in developing the Strategic Compass will be a joint threat analysis that the EU High Representative will present by the end of 2020. The Strategic Compass should cover priorities within the scope of response to external crises, capacity building of partners and protection of the Union and its citizens. It will also take into account lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHEN: Monday 28 September, 13.45 CET.

ROOM: Remote participation (via Spinelli 3G3)
