The European Parliament will not observe the second round of the presidential elections in Ecuador

Statement by David McAllister and Tomas Tobé, Co-Chairs of the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group, on the upcoming second round of presidential elections in Ecuador.

“The European Parliament will not observe the second round of the presidential elections in Ecuador scheduled for 11 April. Consequently, it will comment neither on the process nor on the results that will be announced afterwards."

"No individual Member of the European Parliament has been mandated to observe or comment on this electoral process on behalf of the European Parliament. Therefore, should any Member of the European Parliament decide to witness these elections, they would do so on their own initiative and should, under no circumstances, through any statement or action, associate their participation with the European Parliament.”

The Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) is the body in charge of organising the election observation delegations of the European Parliament. In doing so, it adheres to the international Code of Conduct for International Election Observers endorsed by the European Parliament on 16 May 2017. Under the Code of Conduct, observers must maintain political impartiality at all times and respect the integrity of the international election observation mission.
