The European Parliament on Monday signed the Lisbon declaration that commits to combat homelessness and offer sfe and accessible accommodation for all by 2030.

The declaration, adopted jointly by the European Parliament, the European Commission, several member states and stakeholders, aims to channel the commitment of all relevant actors to work towards the eradication of homelessness by 2030. It supports the launch of the new European Platform on Combatting Homelessness that aims to share best practices and improve policy making on this issue.

“Out there, on the street, you can never feel safe. Just imagine to be out there, in the street on the hard concrete, night by night even with your children. Housing is a fundamental human right. And yet, despite this fact, 700 000 people sleep on the hard concrete. This is not a Europe where no one can be left behind. To change this, we do not need words, we need action.” said the chair of the committee on Employment and Social Affairs Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová (Renew, SK), representing the European Parliament at the conference.

Background

The launch of the European Platform on Combatting Homelessness was included in the Action plan on the European Pillar of Social Rights. The platform aims to promote a political dialogue on combating homelessness. It will do so by providing support to mutual learning for policy makers and practitioners, by highlighting good practices, including through a European prize, and by strengthening monitoring homelessness with a view to better reviewing progress towards the goal of ending homelessness by 2030.
