Presentation of candidates and election of the new EP President

The four candidates standing in the first round to become Parliament’s President for the second half of the term will present themselves to plenary at 9.00. MEPs will then vote, up to four times, to appoint their next President. To be elected, a candidate needs the backing of an absolute majority of valid votes, cast by secret vote. Voting will be done remotely due to the pandemic, and candidacies may be added or withdrawn at each round. The newly elected President may address the Chamber after being appointed.

Election of the 14 Vice-Presidents of the Parliament

Following the appointment of the new President, MEPs will elect the 14 Vice-Presidents who, together with the President and five Quaestors, comprise Parliament’s Bureau. If there are more than 14 candidates for the post, the Vice-Presidents will be elected via remote and secret vote, by a single ballot. If fewer than 14 candidates obtain the required absolute majority of votes cast, there will be a second round, and potentially, a third, in which a simple majority will be enough.
