War in Ukraine: press conference on Cohesion action for refugees in Europe

Press Releases

Mr Younous Omarjee (The Left, FR) and Ms Elisa Ferreira, the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, will brief journalists on emergency funds for refugees, on Thursday at 13:00.

On 8th March, European Commission put forward a proposal for Cohesion's Action for Refugees in Europe (CARE). It introduces changes to current cohesion policy rules to allow a swift reallocation of available funding to help Member States to provide emergency support (temporary accommodation, food and water supplies, medical care or education) to people fleeing from Russian aggression in Ukraine.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 3 million people have left the country since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, most of them heading to neighbouring countries.

MEPs are preparing to consider this file urgently during 23-24 March mini plenary in order to unlock cohesion funds for refugees, with a final vote in plenary on Thursday.

Mr. Younous Omarjee (The Left, FR), the lead MEP and the Chair of Regional Development Committee, and Ms Elisa Ferreira, the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, will share with media main takeaways from the vote.
