Subcommittee on Security and Defence delegation to visit Georgia

MEPs will assess the possible implications for Georgia of Russia’s war against Ukraine and express their solidarity and support for the country’s territorial integrity.

A delegation of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will travel to Georgia from 10 to 14 April. They will assess the work of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) as well as the possible implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine for the country.

MEPs will meet, among others, with the Georgian President, the Prime Minister, the Chairman of the Parliament and the Minister of Defence. They also intend to pay two field visits to the Administrative Boundary Lines in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Through this visit, the European Parliament wants to express its solidarity and underline its support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.

Background

The EU cooperates with Georgia in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy and its eastern regional dimension, the Eastern Partnership. In March, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Georgia officially applied for membership of the European Union. The country would also like to be a member of NATO.
