New EU election law: press conference on Tuesday at 17:00 CEST
On Tuesday, after the plenary vote on the proposal for new rules for EU elections, rapporteur Domènec Ruiz Devesa will brief journalists in Strasbourg and remotely.
The draft legislative initiative report on the reform of the European Electoral Act steered by Domènec Ruiz Devesa (S&D, ES) calls for EU-wide electoral lists, rules for gender equality, and new minimum electoral standards in all member states.
When: Tuesday 3 May 2022, 17.00 - 17.30 CEST
Where: Daphne Caruana Galizia room (WEISS N -1/201), European Parliament in Strasbourg
How: Accredited media representatives can attend the press conference physically. Journalists wishing to ask questions remotely need to connect via Interactio (https://broadcaster.interactio.eu/join/66e2-hy1p-1w4u). The press conference will also be web streamed live and recorded on the Parliament’s Multimedia Centre. Interpretation will be available to and from English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Polish.
The draft proposal to be voted by plenary on Tuesday foresees that voters will elect MEPs both in national constituencies and in a European-wide constituency (composed by 28 additional EP seats). These transnational lists would have to respect geographical representation to avoid disadvantaging smaller member states. In addition, MEPs propose holding the elections on the same day (9 May) in all EU member states and common standards to promote equal and fair participation.
