The new subcommittee on public health (SANT) elected MEP Bartosz Arłukowicz as Chair, as well as the four Vice-Chairs, at its constitutive meeting today.

Members elected by acclamation the following MEPs to head the subcommittee:

According to its approved mandate, the subcommittee will deal with pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, the health aspects of bioterrorism, the European Medicines Agency, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The first ordinary meeting is planned for 20 April 2023, in Strasbourg.

Following his election, SANT Chair Bartosz Arłukowicz said: “Setting up the Public Health Subcommittee follows on naturally from the work carried out by the Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA). I am delighted that we will have an opportunity to work again for patients across the EU. A new pharmaceutical strategy for Europe is one of our greatest challenges for the coming months. This framework should guarantee equal and permanent access to medicines, a critical element for citizens’ health in the European Union”.

Background

In February 2023, Parliament approved the creation of the public health subcommittee, made up of 30 full members. The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) remains responsible for examining and voting on legislative proposals.
