Development MEPs on fact-finding visit to Kenya

Press Releases

A delegation of six MEPs from the Committee on Development will visit Nairobi and projects in the region to assess the impact of EU support for Kenya’s development goals.

The six-member delegation will be led by Committee on Development Vice-Chair Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana (Greens/EFA, DE), and will be in Kenya from 3-5 April.

During their visit, MEPs will meet with counterparts from the Kenyan parliament, as well as representatives of the Kenyan government and administration. They will hold talks with local civil society groups, officials from the UN bodies in Nairobi, and representatives from EU member state diplomatic missions and the EU’s delegation in Kenya. As part of the visit, the MEPs will also undertake site visits to several EU-funded projects to get a better understanding of EU investment in the region, and in particular Kenya’s efforts to deal with prolonged drought and the worsening impact of climate shocks.

Kenya remains a key economic and political partner for the EU, with an important role as a regional peace broker and energy producer. In the course of their three-day mission, the Development Committee MEPs will take stock of Kenya's agricultural sector, food security and resilience to climatic shocks. They will also discuss with representatives from the European Investment Bank's regional representation in the context of the roll-out and increasing geopolitical relevance in the region of the EU’s Global Gateway Initiative.
