Rule of law in the EU: MEPs and national MPs to take stock of developments
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will hold a meeting with parliamentarians from the member states to discuss the state of the rule of law in the EU.
The interparliamentary committee meeting, in which MPs from the member states will participate in person, will feature speeches and presentations from members of parliament from Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Germany, and Greece, as well as:
- Juan Fernando López Aguilar, LIBE Committee Chair;
- Didier Reynders, Commissioner for Justice (video message);
- Pascual Ignacio Navarro Ríos, Secretary of State for the European Union, Spanish Presidency of the Council;
- Julien Mousnier, Director for Rule of Law, Fundamental Rights and Democracy, Directorate General for Justice and Consumers, European Commission;
- Sophie In’t Veld (Renew, NL), Chair of the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group and rapporteur on the Commission’s Annual Rule of Law report;
- Petra Bárd, Professor, Radboud University and Research Affiliate, CEU Democracy Institute;
- Hanne Juncher, Director for Information Society and Action against Crime and former GRECO Executive Secretary, Council of Europe; and
- Vitor Teixeira, Senior Policy Officer, Transparency International.

Where: European Parliament in Brussels, Paul-Henri SPAAK building, room 3C50.
The first session will focus on the Commission’s annual Rule of Law report assessing the situation across the EU, and the European Parliament’s analysis of the Commission’s report. A second session will revolve around the fight against corruption as part of efforts to safeguard EU values.
In accordance with Parliament’s inter-institutional framework initiative, the rule of law situation is evaluated in five specific Member States each year, which will be represented by parliamentarians in the meeting.
