“We must ensure that the humanitarian situation in Gaza improves immediately”

Udo Bullmann, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, issued a statement after an official visit to the Egyptian border of Gaza, Israel and Palestine.

"We must ensure that the humanitarian situation in Gaza improves immediately. This will only be possible with a ceasefire. Negotiations are currently failing on both sides. This conflict has been smouldering for decades and the situation has never been as messy as it is at the moment. As Europeans, it is our duty to increase the pressure on both sides. We are the largest financier of the Palestinian Authority and we are Israel's largest trading partner. It is high time that we utilise our possibilities. We must not miss this historic momentum", declared Udo Bullmann (S&D, DE).

Background

M. Bullmann conducted an official visit in his capacity as Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, to the Egyptian border of Gaza, Israel and Palestine between 2-5 March, to gain insight into the difficult conflict situation in the region from a humanitarian and human rights perspective.

During the visit, he held meetings with political actors such as the Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and high-ranking Members of the Knesset, as well as with representatives of both Palestinian and Israeli civil society.

He also visited families of Israeli hostages, a kibbutz attacked by Hamas on October 7, a logistics centre and a hospital located at Al Arish on the Egyptian-Palestinian border, as well as the humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza, such as the Red Crescent, the World Food Programme, Médecins Sans Frontières and UNWRA.
