Kyrgyzstan: Statement by the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights
Mounir Satouri, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, released a statement after the Kyrgyz authorities informed MEPs they will not receive their delegation, scheduled in February.
“Yesterday, we were informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic that the Kyrgyz authorities will not receive the delegation of the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) of the European Parliament at the scheduled dates of 25 to 28 February 2025.
This decision is regrettable and comes as a surprise as preparations were well underway. With this mission we were aiming to reinforce the cooperation on the enforcement of human rights in the country, as the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA), currently in the process of ratification, requires the European Union's and Kyrgyzstan’s full compliance with the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms and upholding of democratic standards, as essential elements of this new Agreement.
It would have been a very timely and appropriate moment to have an open and constructive dialogue on these issues with our Kyrgyz interlocutors, given that the European Parliament is currently preparing for the consent procedure on the EPCA.”
