MEPs back UN Commission on the Status of Women
From 17 to 20 March, a delegation from the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee attended the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
This week MEPs attended the 69th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York. The meeting focused on reviewing implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.
On 18 March, MEPs hosted a side event on fighting gender-based violence, both offline and online, and on creating opportunities for and addressing the challenges inherent in advancing women in leadership positions. The event can be viewed here.
MEPs had a full programme of meetings with CSW69 actors, civil society organisations, and government representatives.

Lina Gálvez, Chair (S&D, Spain), chair of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee and head of the delegation, made the following statement: “It is no secret that these are turbulent times, with a well-funded backlash against women’s rights and international law. That is why I am proud to underline the European Parliament’s, and the EU’s, full support for the CSW69, the goals enshrined in the Beijing Declaration, gender quality, and women’s rights. Women make up half the world’s population - we will never stop fighting for our rights, and the rights of women and girls around the world!”
Members of the delegation
Joanna SCHEURING-WIELGUS (S&D, Poland)
Margarita DE LA PISA CARRIÓN (PfE, Spain)
Abir AL-SAHLANI (Renew, Sweden)
Mélissa CAMARA (Greens, France)
Background
In preparation for the CSW69, Parliament adopted a recommendation in December in which MEPs called for targeted measures to address women's human rights and gender equality. These included gender-responsive budgeting and measures to increase women’s representation in leadership roles, whether in politics, business, or security and defence. It called for action to step up the fight against gender violence online and offline, for safe and accessible women’s health care, and for women to be included in peace-building processes and negotiations.
